What is LoRaWAN?

LoRaWAN® (Long Range Wide Area Network) is a license-free, energy-efficient wireless protocol designed for long-range communication. Based on the LoRa® modulation technology, it is ideally suited for the Internet of Things (IoT), where low data rates, long battery lifetimes, and reliable transmission are crucial.

The LoRaWAN® network architecture is based on a Star-of-Stars topology, where gateways act as intermediaries between end devices and a central network server. By leveraging the license-free Sub-GHz ISM band (e.g., 868 MHz in Europe), LoRaWAN® enables communication over several kilometers—ideal for applications such as smart metering, asset tracking, and smart cities.

LoRaWAN® supports bidirectional communication and provides end-to-end encryption for secure data transmission. Networks can be deployed flexibly—either as private infrastructures or by connecting to public LoRaWAN® networks. Since LoRaWAN® is built on patents held by Semtech Corporation, compatible radio modules from Semtech or its licensed partners are required for implementation.
