mioty® is an innovative, ETSI-standardized wireless protocol (TS 103 357) operating in the sub-GHz band, specifically developed to meet the demands of large-scale, energy-efficient IoT applications. Originally invented by Fraunhofer IIS, mioty® is now advanced by the mioty® Alliance and its members. The technology enables highly robust and scalable data transmission for industrial use cases, even under harsh radio conditions.
At the heart of mioty® is the patented Telegram Splitting Multiple Access (TSMA) method. This technique splits data packets into multiple sub-packets directly at the sensor level. These sub-packets are transmitted at different times and across varying frequencies, drastically reducing airtime. This minimizes energy consumption and significantly increases interference resistance. Even if some sub-packets are lost due to collisions or interference, advanced forward error correction (FEC) allows reliable data reconstruction.
With its ability to handle up to 1.6 million messages per day per gateway and its ultra-low power profile, mioty® is ideal for large-scale networks with long device lifetimes and high node density – perfect for Industry 4.0, smart cities, and utility networks.
mioty® is based on patents from four technology providers and licensed centrally via Sisvel International S.A. The protocol is currently supported by major semiconductor platforms such as Silicon Labs, STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments – with additional providers planning adoption.
